RECOGNITION
Description
Adult: Color varies from pale green to yellowish brown, and sometimes with dark markings or with reddish brown being the major color. Thorax: The scutellum is dark and the area forming a heart shape is pale. The forward area of the pronotum bears multiple (usually more than 2) spots or dark areas. The side of the thorax has one or more spots or lines. Mouthparts: The rostrum extends below the point of attachment of the last pair of legs. Wing: Membrane is tinted black. Setae are dense, long. Punctation is dense. Legs: The tibiae may be red, especially when contrasted against the otherwise pale color of adult females. Nymphs resemble adults, but are wingless and uniformly pale green with red-tipped antennae.
Body Length
Male: 4.25-5 mm. Female: 4.25-5.25.
Similar Taxa
Pale Legume Bug (Lygus elisus) is greenish and the heart shape on its scutellum is not as well-defined as in L. hesperus. The pronotum bears only 2 spots and its thorax sides have no lines or dots. The wing membrane is clear. The rostrum, also, does not extend below where the last pair of legs of attach. Tarnished Plant Bug (Lygus lineolaris) is a much darker species, also with extensive dark lines on the head and pronotum. The scutellum is more dark and the pale area does not form a heart shape. Thorax sides have much heavier dark lines.
